a little pick-me-up

I can’t believe it’s the end of the month already!

There are so many other delectable comfort food dishes to sample. Don’t worry. We’ll serve up more comfort sometime soon. But for now, I’d like to add some cozy thoughts and a few chuckles to your bowl. Nosh, nourish, pass it on. Offer someone a little comfort today as you go about your business (a smile or hug works wonders).

"From morning till night, sounds drift from the kitchen, most of them familiar and comforting….On days when warmth is the most important need of the human heart, the kitchen is the place you can find it; it dries the wet sock, it cools the hot little brain.”  ~ E.B.White

"Some sensible person once remarked that you spend the whole of your life either in your bed or in your shoes. Having done the best you can by shoes and bed, devote all the time and resources at your disposal to the building up of a fine kitchen. It will be, as it should be, the most comforting and comfortable room in the house." ~ Elizabeth David, French Country Cooking

"On a hot day in Virginia, I know nothing more comforting than a fine spiced pickle, brought up trout-like from the sparkling depths of the aromatic jar below the stairs of Aunt Sally’s cellar." ~ Thomas Jefferson

"I love to cook comfort food. I’ll make fish and vegetables or meat and vegetables and potatoes or rice. The ritual of it is fun for me, and the creativity of it." ~ Reese Witherspoon

"I like rice. Rice is great if you’re hungry and want 2000 of something." ~ Mitch Hedberg

"Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what’s for lunch." ~ Orson Welles

"That would be cool if you could eat a good food with a bad food and the good food would cover for the bad food when it got to your stomach. Like you could eat a carrot with an onion ring and they would travel down to your stomach, then they would get there, and the carrot would say, ‘It’s cool, he’s with me.’" ~ Mitch Hedberg

A little somethin’ to go with your soup:

  1. There is something really wonderful about opening my LJ Friends page and finding a bowl of COMFORT.

As far as I can tell, my just released book by that title is making its way to my doorstep.

Love the food and kitchen quotes, too!

  2. Oh, how exciting! Congratulations on the new release! A friend just gave me a copy of Healing Water, which is now at the top of my TBR pile. I’m always anxious to read about books set in Hawai’i (my home state).

  3. I like the quote from E.B. White the best. It’s really heartwarming. :o)

Japanese food is my favorite comfort food. When I am depressed, I want to eat Japanese food. I think it’s the sticky Japanese rice that really comforts me.

  4. Oh I LOVE grilled cheese sandwiches. As a child they were always made with Velveeta cheese and while I know it is processed to death, I sometimes want to get some and make just one sandwich to see if it tastes as I remember it.

  5. Yum on the Japanese food. People usually crave carbs when depressed or stressed, so your craving for rice makes total sense (the sticky stuff has more starch).

  6. Homemade chicken soup (my usual lunch staple), half a grapefruit (peeled, not spooned), and some apple cheesecake. 😀

  7. I think this was before Velveetta became the free government cheese but I always remember getting the slicer to slice it really thick so it would ooze over the edges of the bread onto the griddle. We used the flip side of the wafflemaker to make grilled cheese sandwiches so they were always smooshed really thin. I love burnt cheese so I always made my sandwiches fat.

Later we had Kraft singles but not often because it was so much more expensive. 🙂

  8. I’m getting ready to launch a contest for copies of Comfort. Would love to save and use your comfort soup image in the contest announcement.

And maybe the hot chocolate one too. What do you think? I’d give you the credit and link to your page.

If you’d rather not, I understand.

  9. Joyce, feel free to use both images! The bowl of soup is from Flickr, so you would need to link back to the original page as I did, and credit DJ Bizze.

The hot chocolate image is something I found on Photobucket, so no attribution is needed. 🙂
