Polka dot polka dot. Hip hip hooray!!

Guess who’s got a brand new book officially out today?

Two clues:

  1. She’s one of my all-time favorite children’s author/illustrators.
  2. She likes to bake cupcakes.

Yes, Newbery Honor winner Grace Lin has done it again! Her new early reader, Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same! (Little, Brown, 2010), packs a double wallop because it’s all about twins. If it’s possible to love a book twice as much as I should, I’m guilty times two.

How could I possibly resist these adorable imps? Everyone tells Ling and Ting they are exactly the same, but in six interconnected vignettes, they show us just how different they are — in personality and abilities.

In the first story, the girls get a haircut. Ling sits still and gets a nice clip, but Ting’s a bit of a wriggle worm, sneezing when hair falls on her nose. "Oh no!" She ends up sporting a cutting edge (giggle) set of bangs for the rest of the book. An ingenious way to set the stage, making us want to read more of their amusing antics.

Sigh. Here it is: the final Grace Lin painting being offered in the year-long Small Graces charity auction benefiting the Foundation for Children’s Books.

I especially love the proverb because it reflects my underlying purpose here at alphabet soup: food for the body, mind and spirit. I think most of us are probably good at feeding our bodies, but we sometimes forget how important it is to nourish the soul — not only by reading good books and poetry, but by making sure that our daily lives are enriched with music to gladden the heart, art that allows us to see the world anew, and a mindful appreciation of nature.

In concert with all of these things is the importance of kindness and generosity, two traits which definitely characterize uber-talented children’s author/illustrator Grace Lin, who came up with the idea for Small Graces. As before, December’s painting is an original, unpublished, gouache on Arches watercolor paper gem, approximately 5" x 5", and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity. 100% of the proceeds goes to support underserved schools in the greater Boston area. This is a unique opportunity to own original art at affordable prices.

Thinking you’d like to share Grace’s art with someone special this holiday season, but wishing it was even more affordable? Child at Heart Gallery is offering three Small Graces paintings as open edition signed glicee prints! Are you ready for the unbelievable price? Only $28.50, including shipping and handling!!

Click on the images below if you’d like to purchase them online:

From January 2009:

May 2009:

September 2009:

FYI, I was lucky to win an original and later I purchased one of the glicee prints to compare the quality. The print is outstanding and looks like an original. So don’t hesitate to order them as gifts!!

More good news:

The Foundation for Children’s Books has just announced they will continue Small Graces in 2010, offering original paintings by other children’s illustrators (Melissa Sweet, Diane deGroat, Matt Tavares, Anna Alter, and Jarrett Krozocska, to name a few)!! Woo Hoo! So many of my favorite artists! I can tell it’s going to be a good year!

So, don’t miss your chance to own Grace Lin’s original painting for December by clicking through to bid on Ebay now through Friday, December 18th — or for a Grace Lin signed glicee print, click through to Child at Heart Gallery (1/2 of the proceeds will benefit the FCB).

If you feel like swooning, look again at all 12 of Grace’s paintings offered this year at SmallGraces.org.

november small graces

Okay, you’re on alert.

DO NOT bid on this gorgeous original painting by Grace Lin, because I want to win it!

Just look at it. Can you blame me? The warm reds, that cozy fire, the girl wrapped all snuggly in her blue quilt, tucked in with her origami animals? And the proverb! I think it’s my favorite so far. I’ve always always always believed in extending kindness whenever possible. Just one word or a little smile can make someone’s day. Things are tough all around. A kind word costs you nothing.

As before, this one-of-a-kind, unpublished gouache on Arches watercolor paper gem is approximately 5" x 5", and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Foundation for Children’s Books, a small non-profit supporting underserved schools in the greater Boston area.

On second thought, please click through to Ebay to place a bid ☺. After all, there are only two more Small Graces paintings for 2009, two more chances this year to help raise as much money as we can for a great cause. It’s going to be a cold winter. Wouldn’t this painting make someone extremely happy this Christmas? It warms my heart just thinking about it! This auction runs through Friday, November 20th.

Happy Monday and Happy Writing!
