Put on your bibs, because today I’m going to the spoons.
This is not the same as going to the dogs, going to the mattresses, or going bananas.
Going to the spoons means finding a poem which nourishes the soul with just one tiny spoonful of sweet sustenance.
Do we take things for granted?
Fail to see all the possibilities?

If so, perhaps it’s time to open wide and taste this goodness:
THE SPOON
by Richard Jones
Some days I think I need nothing
more in life than a spoon.
With a spoon I can eat oatmeal
Or take the medicine doctors prescribe
I can swat a fly sleeping on the sill
or pound the table to get attention.
I can point accusingly at God
or stab the empty air repeatedly.
Looking into the spoon’s mirror,
I can study my face in its shiny bowl,
or cover one eye to make half the world
disappear. With a spoon
I can dig a tunnel to freedom
spoonful by spoonful of dirt,
or waste life catching moonlight
and flinging it into the blackest night.
What do you see in your favorite spoon?

Lots of delicious poetry is being served today by Karen at Mommy’s Favorite Children’s Books. Be sure to sample everything!
Oh, before you go, a little spoonlight —

BTW, did I tell you how good you look today?
Not the same as “going to the mattresses”. Heh. And now, I really want to watch You’ve Got Mail again.
Lovely post, Jama!

Well, I thought I needed nothing more than a spoon, and then I saw those cupcakes. Oh. My. Word.
Love the poem, though. I’ve decided to “waste my life” catching moonlight. Yeah.

One of my favorite spoons is the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down! I’m pretty sure that’s what you gave us with your closing image and line…except there was no nasty medicine in your post! So maybe a spoonful of sugar is good no matter what it follows!!

I’m with you Mary Lee! But also, I have measured out my life with coffee spoons… since back in college days…
Thanks for bringing the appreciation of spoons to us jama. Eating oatmeal with my sons right now…
I love your blog and your images too! And you are looking pretty fine yourself this morning.

how about spoons that make you go hmmm …
The ones that land in the garbage disposal and have to be fished out (I can do this now without too much squirming … yay me) I should keep them, banged up edges and all, as badges of honor … hee-hee!
Loved the poems and all the spoons, Jama!

Yes, I did think of Mary Poppins’ spoon! I’m addicted to sugar — just ask my bathroom scale.

Thank you, Andi! Oh yes, those famous coffee spoons — one of the greatest mentions in all of literature. It would have to be teaspoons for me, though, since I don’t drink coffee. 😀

Lovely poem! We can make so much from so little…like making half the world disappear!
I’m in love with the cupcakes at the end, and have to say how funny it is that you have the Minneapolis spoon and cherry up because the cherry has been down for cleaning the past week or so. All we’ve got is the spoon. But after reading the poem, hey, the spoon is enough!

I thought of you when I found the big spoon and cherry photo! Wow, that’s so cool — and ironic that the cherry is down for cleaning :D. What’s the story behind the sculpture?
