friday feast: guess who’s looking at you?

On this brisk and beautiful autumn day, a little feast for the eyes. Ladies, brace yourselves.

THE LOOK

Strephon kissed me in the spring,
Robin in the fall,
But Colin only looked at me
And never kissed at all.

Strephon’s kiss was lost in jest,
Robin’s lost in play,
But the kiss in Colin’s eyes
Haunts me night and day.

I love this little gem by Sara Teasdale. It’s light, lyrical, flirty, and touches on the essence of romance. I am reminded of Charlotte Brontë, whose primary literary theme was unrequited love. The “what might have been’s” and the fantasies surrounding an idealized love often make for a better story with its inherent longing and suspense, setting the stage for a good old-fashioned chase.

The question now is, has anyone ever given you “the look”?

While you’re pondering that, let’s look some more at Mr. Firth looking at us. Put your bibs on to catch all the drool. 🙂

  1. I hadn’t read that poem by Sara Teasdale — thanks for sharing a new one (and for all the photos!) The quote by Abigail Van Buren seems to go awfully well with the poem.

    1. This poem makes a nice companion piece for Leigh Hunt’s “Jenny Kissed Me,” which I also like. You’re right about the Abby quote — what we can imagine far surpasses the reality in most instances. 🙂

      1. That’s funny that you mention “Jenny Kissed Me,” because my son was looking through the Poetry Out Loud poems the other day, trying to figure out which ones to do, and he said that he thought “Jenny Kissed Me” would be a crowd-pleaser 🙂

  9. Oh, my! Sara Teasdale hits the mark with that poem and Colin hits the mark with those eyes. *swoon* I’m so looking forward to the movie he has coming out soon, “Kingsman: The Secret Service”. Thanks for the aerobic exercise that is Colin Gazing – no need for a jog now. =)

    1. Best form of exercise IMHO! So glad you agree :). He has a couple of new movies coming out — busy actor. I’m anxious to see him in Kingsman too — kind of a James Bond character.

  10. I love this “Colinfest: The Sequel” !! My favorite photo is still the one of him as a teenager, posted in the original Happy-Birthday Colinfest (yes, the one all the hussies clicked on) – he must be fourteen, fifteen years old? and already swoon-worthy. Firth is one of those men who can’t be compared to normal people. Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and George Clooney – almost too gorgeous to be real, no?

    1. Plus I think that those three men all seem able to take the attention with a grain of salt – they all know it’s a little silly but take it in stride and are kind of self-mocking, which is even more attractive!

    2. I never took you for a hussy, but now I know! I like the pics of Colin when he was a teen too, before he became COLIN FIRTH. You’re right about certain people being larger than life, too gorgeous to be real. The thing is, our fantasies of who they are make them perfect in our minds — one reason I’d never want to actually meet Colin in person.

      Also agree that being self-mocking and not taking themselves too seriously and being humble make them even more attractive. 🙂

  11. So much eye candy in one post, Jama! I think I’m having a sugar overdose. The only clear memory I have of being given “the look” is when my best friend in HS and I used to practice on each other. LOL. Never hurts to be prepared!
