Brush, dab, paint. Snip, snip, trim. Arrange, layer, rearrange.
It’s fun imagining collage artist, designer and illustrator Clover Robin creating another stunning piece in her Greenwich, London home. With her cat Winnie as companion and muse, she indulges her love of nature and all things botanical “inspired by a childhood of woodland walks and countryside rambles.”
Clover grew up in Devon and studied at Leeds College of Art and Design and Central Saint Martins. Home studio aside, she particularly enjoys being on location:
I’m pretty much at my happiest when I’m working in my sketchbook and looking directly at the scene or subject I’m creating.
She recently traveled up and down the west coast of America, documenting the beautiful vistas she viewed from the passenger side of the front seat. Where most artists would do pencil or ink sketches in their notebooks, Clover collaged as she went. Pretty amazing!
She hopes to tour the Nordic countries on her next road trip. 🙂
Her collage materials and tools include hand painted scraps of newspaper and tissue, two small pairs of scissors, acrylic and gouache paints, colored pencils and lots of acid-free glue sticks.
Her work has a quiet beauty about it that I find calming and restful. Her use of white space gives her collages a pristine and unpretentious vibe, and she has a knack for creating compositions that are uncluttered and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It’s all about shapes, colors and textures arranged just so.
I love that in addition to creating gorgeous representations of plants, flowers, trees, and gardens, she’s also done fruits and veggies, and – *wait for it* – a botanical alphabet!
I also find her houses charming; they’re supposedly her second favorite thing to collage after botanicals. 🙂
Other inspirations include scenic Cornwall, beautifully illustrated children’s books, old botanical drawings, and the “simplicity and vibrancy of 60’s and 70’s illustration.” Among her favorites are Charlie Harper, Paul Rand, Ellsworth Kelly and John Pipers.

I find that pretty amazing too. Either they traveled on very smooth highways, or her driver was extra exceptional. 🙂

Thought of you when I saw the movie, Loving Vincent. Besides a story of Vincent Van Gogh in fabulous oil paintings, Aiden Turner has a small part. Highly recommend.
