AEDH WISHES FOR THE CLOTHS OF HEAVEN
by William Butler Yeats (1899)
Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
And she had lucky eyes and a high heart. . .and wisdom that caught fire. . .
from the Old Age Of Queen Maeve by Yeats. . .
I LOVE YEATS!!!!!

Me too! This is one of the few things I’ve memorized in recent years.

I so love that poem. Especially “The blue and the dim and the dark cloths/Of night and light and the half light”. I used to have this one memorized, and really need to dust it off.

Have you seen the BBC mini series, “Sex, Chips and Rock ‘n Roll?” It’s about two sisters growing up in Manchester, England in the 60’s. This poem is recited several times to good effect. It was also spoken in an episode of “Ballykissangel.” I never tire of hearing it. BTW, that’s my favorite line, too :)!

No sex and chips and rock n’ roll for me, sadly. Although I dearly love chips with malt vinegar. Mmmmm.
