“As a writer you are free. You are about the freest person that ever was. Your freedom is what you have bought with your solitude, your loneliness.” ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
I thought the photo depicted the writer’s plight perfectly — not only being solitary, but always on the precipice, trying to keep the right balance, putting yourself out there, etc.
It’s weird that you find piers creepy, though. Is it fear of falling into the water? OR did you once have a bad run-in with a longshoreman :)?
Just the idea of being surrounded by water, with only one escape. What if I lose my balance? I can’t swim.
I don’t do well with small boats, either. Cruise ships, OTOH… 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thanks for reminding me. I know this is true, but it hits me differently expressed in this beautiful way. And now I have this lovely image to store in my head, too.
Beautiful picture. Even though a “pier” is listed as one of my ten creepiest things, lol.

Amazing quote. It’s all a matter of perspective, isn’t it? Sometimes loneliness makes us forget about the amount of freedom we have.
