My pulse quickens whenever I see a David Schab painting. I’m enamored of the strong interplay between light and shadow, the patterns, the passion and, of course, his rich, gorgeous colors, which are at the heart of his work.

Though Schab also paints landscapes and portraits, his still lifes are my favorite. I’m fascinated by the selection and arrangement of objects, each of which has a story of its own. Unlike reading a linear narrative, where a plot unfolds gradually and characters are revealed in turn, when you look at a picture you see everything all at once. As your eyes travel from object to object, you consider juxtapositions, make connections, or even begin to create your own story, moment by moment.

I enjoy feasting on Schab’s pictures – the cups, jugs, fruits, plates, flowers, vases, and cool table linens (diamonds, stars, stripes!). Who could resist a red polka dot coffee pot? And anyone who paints teddy bears is okay by me. 🙂

Though Schab lives and works in Bristol, England, he’s originally from Rybnik, Poland (b. 1973). He studied law, earning a degree in Political Science from the University of Silesia in Katowice. He also graduated with a degree in Painting from the Jan Dtugosz University in Częstochowa, and attended painting and drawing classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow for two years.

Though he had been drawing since childhood, he only began painting at an easel in 1999. He works in oil on canvas, and with dry pastels on paper. He describes his style as bordering on Fauvism and Expressionism.

His influences include Matisse, Gauguin, Hockney and Fauvism in general.

Schab has participated in many individual and group exhibitions in Poland, Great Britain, and Italy. His work can be found in private collections in Europe, America, South Africa and Asia.

Thanks for sharing his rich art Jama, love the larger scale, and definitely Fauve -Matisse influenced art, with a bit of Wayne Thiebaud in there:

Thanks for the infusion of color on this drab & dreary day, Jama, though as I now am writing, the sun just popped out! I especially love the one in the video of the red tulips.

Well, each one is a gem, Jama. I love that teddy, too, but most of all, since I love trees, I enjoyed seeing how he painted them, not all alike either! Thank you!

This art reminds us very much of David Hockney’s pictures. For our taste here is too much, Hockney is more minimalistic, what we prefer.
We have recently been at Salts Mill to see Hockney’s digital art and blogged about it
