rommydebommy redux

More than just a cake, it’s a handbag!

Happy 10th Birthday to RommydeBommy! 2025 is a banner year marking a decade of being in business!

Today we’re excited to feature more of Netherlands artist and designer Rommy Kuperus’s amazing wearable art. Back in October 2015, she was one of the first artists we interviewed for our Indie Artist Spotlight series. We were blown away by her over-the-top, fun and fanciful food-inspired handbags, purses, and fashion accessories.

We were impressed by how she made everything by hand herself, creating unique, drool-worthy pieces. Now, 10 years later, she’s still a one-woman operation and continues to wow everyone with new designs that defy belief. Whether croissants, a stack of pancakes, a loaf of bread, layer cakes, s’mores, fish ‘n chips, cherry pies, burritos, tacos, TV dinners, fruit tarts, hot cross buns, on and on — all of her hand-painted clay-foam accessories look sooooo realistic and continue to turn heads.

Moreover, how she established RommydeBommy is also very inspiring. Long story short, she left art school to forge her own path. Back in July, she shared the experience on social media:

Rommy in 2015.

Exactly 10 years ago, I took this photo — right after the head of my art school told me I was a “different case” and that I needed to change in order to fit into the world of art school. In that moment, everything became clear: I didn’t belong there. I thanked her, grabbed my things, walked out of the building — and never looked back. I remember the strange, stubborn smile stuck on my face as I biked back to my student room. I took this photo when I got home, jumping on my bed. I didn’t have a plan yet, but I knew one thing for sure: I was going to show the world my talent. With just enough money to pay my rent — and whatever was left going toward a bag of chips for dinner and a few materials to explore my creativity — I started small. Bow ties, necklaces, little bags. Every time I received an order, I reinvested in new materials. A few months later, major online platforms like BuzzFeed USA/Australia, The Huffington Post, MTV, and others began writing about my work. I was completely over the moon! Suddenly, hundreds of people were buying my art through my Etsy shop. I remember lying in bed, feeling like an excited little girl who couldn’t wait for her birthday the next morning.

I never wrote a business plan. I never got advice on how to run a business. I just dove in, head first, without thinking too much about the future.

Never do what your parents want, or your friends, or what society expects — always listen to yourself.

To be honest, it feels like it’s been twenty years. I’ve never learned as much as I have in these past ten.

And in these past ten years, I haven’t seen any other artist-designer do what she does. She’s an original who’s been able to maintain a high standard of quality over time. Last fall, her work was featured at the Kunts Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art in The Hague, Netherlands.

Earlier this year, Rommy visited South Korea, where she enjoyed this bow croissant.
Naturally, she transformed it into a purse.

I love that her art is wearable — beautiful to look at, but also something you can actually use. Since we first interviewed her, she’s added coin purses to her range (how much do I love the cherry pie and dumpling coin purses?!). Too cute!

One of Rommy’s personal faves: Buns in a Bag bag.

Also love her nostalgic favorites (PopTarts, Pineapple Upside-down Cake, Mac ‘n Cheese), seasonal offerings (gingerbread boys, Yule Log, Peeps), cartoon characters (Tweety, SpongeBob Popsicles). Basically, just dream about anything you like to eat — sweet or savory — chances are good Rommy has already made it into a handbag. 🙂

She seems to have a thing for dropped, broken, partially eaten or spilled food, too. This element of the unexpected keeps you smiling. After all, life isn’t perfect, now is it? Still appetizing, still tasty. Speaking of having a sense of humor — she not only has a roasted chicken purse, but a raw one too, wrapped in its supermarket finery. Chickens are always funny. And where would you be able to find a smashed pumpkin bag? Come on! 😀

To think this all started with a young art student who thought the grocery store was like a museum — full of wonderful colors, shapes, and textures. It’s clear she loves what she’s doing; having fun and believing in yourself are essential for good products. While we may not be able to eat our handbags, we can certainly keep our favorite foods next to us at all times.

For lots more, visit the RommydeBommy website, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. You can purchase items via her website shop. She does do custom orders (including non-food items).

For a little peek into her process (which involves soft and hard foam, clay and acrylic paints), check out these videos:

Congratulations, Rommy!

  1. What a fun way to think about what to have for breakfast! Eggs and toast sound good. I’m sure she has done that already. It’s great that she followed her differentness. My oldest grandson is graduating this year and checking out lots of art schools. He has his own style with animation. I hope art schools are more tolerant of the different aspects of artists in 2025! I am definitely going to check out Rommy’s website!

  2. What an inspiring woman — her art that got its start as a tiny donut necklace is now in art museums! Good on Rommy for following her dreams.

  3. Jama! Appreciations for guiding my eyes & delite to this over-the-top, in a great way, creator. I’m fascinated to wonder where her artistry will emerge ifshe tires/moves on from food topics. Maybe she’ll do the implements of the woods- trees, caves, creeks/ or the bits & bots of writers/librarians, tho’ book purses have been done. What of a bookshelf purse? Maybe pen purses, pages of manuscript purses or coin holders or who knows. Maybe an Under the Sea theme. She has got my imagination going -you too. More TY. your fan, JAN
